What's the Best YouTube Thumbnail Size?
Start with the recommended YouTube thumbnail size above, then assess your source image. Canvas dimensions set the working space. A clear HD image can tell the story better than a cluttered 4K design.
Three settings matter at export: dimensions, aspect ratio, and file size. Dimensions describe the number of pixels across and down. Aspect ratio describes the shape. File size measures how much storage the encoded image uses. Changing one does not necessarily fix the others: a wide image can still be too heavy to upload, and a lightweight image can still have the wrong shape.
Set your YouTube thumbnail size before adding images. Stretching a square photograph across the full width distorts faces and objects. Instead, crop deliberately, extend the background in your editor, or place the photograph inside a composition that already has the correct proportions.
YouTube Thumbnail Size in 2026: The 4K Update
YouTube's official thumbnail guidance now recommends 4K dimensions. This page records the guidance checked on September 9, 2026; that is our verification date, not a claimed rollout date. Older tutorials may show a different recommended size or describe the mobile file limit as though it applies to every upload.
Use 4K when you have a detailed photograph or editable artwork. Enlarging a small compressed JPEG cannot recover detail. Rebuild from the source where possible, and judge the result at full size and feed size.
The recommendation also does not mean your video itself has to be 4K. The thumbnail is a separate image asset. Keep its editable project separate from your video timeline so you can revise the headline, crop, or background without exporting the whole video again.

Compare landscape and portrait dimensions below; each format needs its own composition.
| Use | Dimensions in pixels | Shape | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video: current recommendation | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | Start here for a new high-resolution design |
| Video: Full HD reference | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | A common landscape working canvas |
| Video: HD reference | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | A familiar HD reference, not a fixed Thumbrix output |
| Shorts: current recommendation | 2160 × 3840 | 9:16 | Compose vertically for a Short |
| Podcast playlist artwork | Square canvas | 1:1 | Use the same width and height |
Desktop and Mobile Upload Limits
The upload device matters. The official limits are under 50 MB on desktop for video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails; on mobile, under 2 MB for videos and under 10 MB for podcasts. These are upload limits, not targets to fill. Check the size of the actual exported file before sending it to your phone or opening Studio.
For a photograph with rich texture, try a JPG export and inspect the edges of any lettering. PNG can suit flat graphics and crisp text, but a detailed composition may produce a larger file. Keep your editable original, then create a separate upload copy so compression does not permanently replace your best source.
How to Set Your YouTube Thumbnail Size
1. Set Up the Canvas Before You Design
In Photoshop or another image editor, choose pixels as the unit and enter the width and height you need. Check that you have not swapped the two values. A horizontal canvas should look wide. Print settings such as centimeters and pixels per inch are unnecessary here.
If your starting image has a different shape, decide which part tells the story before cropping. For a product comparison, preserve both products. For a travel video, keep the landmark and the person who provides a sense of scale. Leave intentional room for a short headline rather than squeezing words into whatever space happens to remain.
2. Build One Clear Visual Idea
Choose a focal point that makes sense without reading the video title. Use a short phrase when text adds information, and avoid repeating every word of the title on the image. Give lettering enough contrast against its immediate background. A quieter area behind the words often helps more than adding another outline or shadow.
You can start a thumbnail in Thumbrix with a description or your own reference photo. Choose a landscape 16:9 thumbnail or a portrait 9:16 Shorts cover, then select 1080p, 2K, or 4K before generating. Every account can make 1080p images; a monthly plan unlocks 2K and 4K, which use more credits per image. The default 1080p option exports at 1920 × 1080 for landscape or 1080 × 1920 for portrait. The image is resized to fit, so this is an export size rather than a guarantee of native detail. 2K and 4K downloads retain the model output, with actual dimensions shown on the result. Changing the size creates a new image rather than enlarging an older download.
3. Check the Exported YouTube Thumbnail Size
Open the downloaded image, rather than relying only on the editor preview. Confirm its dimensions, orientation, format, and file size. Look for cut-off lettering, accidental borders, distorted faces, and compression artifacts. Save meaningful filenames so you can distinguish versions without opening each one.
Then view the image at roughly the size of a small video card. If the subject disappears or the headline becomes unreadable, simplify the design. More pixels will not solve tiny text. Keep key words away from the lower-right corner, where a video duration label can compete with your composition.
4. Upload in YouTube Studio
For an ordinary video, open YouTube Studio, choose Content, and select your video. In the thumbnail section, choose Upload file, select your image, and save. Custom thumbnail access requires a verified account. For Shorts, follow the separate desktop instructions in the official source linked above.
After saving, review the thumbnail in context with its title. If an upload fails, check the upload-device limit, the file format, and account access before repeatedly resizing the image. Keep the final file and editable source together so a later correction is straightforward.
Common YouTube Thumbnail Size Mistakes
Changing the shape instead of the crop. Dragging an image wider until it fills the canvas can make the subject look unnatural. Preserve proportions when scaling, then adjust the crop or surrounding background. Preview the whole composition after every major change.
Assuming bigger always looks sharper. Upscaling can create a larger file without making eyes, product labels, or fine textures clearer. Inspect the source at its actual resolution first. If it already looks soft, replacing the source may save more time than repeated export experiments.
Checking only on a large monitor. A detailed design can look polished full screen and confusing in a feed. Reduce the preview until it resembles a small card and ask whether the main idea is still obvious. Remove details that do not help the viewer understand the video.
Using one composition for every format. A landscape video cover, a portrait Shorts cover, and square podcast artwork have different space to work with. Rearrange subjects and text for each shape instead of treating every version as a mechanical crop of the same file.
YouTube Thumbnail Size FAQ
Is YouTube thumbnail size 1920x1080 or 1280x720?
Both have a 16:9 aspect ratio. They are Full HD and HD canvas sizes respectively; YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160. Choose a YouTube thumbnail size that suits your source image. Enlarging a small, blurry picture does not restore missing detail.
Is 1920x1080 a valid YouTube thumbnail size?
A 1920 × 1080 image matches the video aspect ratio and exceeds the minimum width. Check its format and file size too. Meeting the pixel dimensions alone does not guarantee an upload; your account must have access to custom thumbnails and the image must follow YouTube policies.
What is the ideal YouTube thumbnail size in 2026?
The current official recommendation for ordinary video thumbnails is 3840 × 2160 pixels. The quick reference above was checked on September 9, 2026. Use the linked YouTube Help page to confirm the requirements again if you are publishing later.
Is a YouTube thumbnail 9:16?
Ordinary video thumbnails use a landscape 16:9 shape. The official recommendation for uploaded Shorts thumbnails is portrait 9:16, at 2160 × 3840 pixels. Podcast playlist artwork uses a square 1:1 shape. Match the YouTube thumbnail size and shape to your content.
What is YouTube thumbnail size in cm?
There is no fixed physical size for a screen image. Centimeters depend on a print-resolution setting. For example, a 1280 × 720 image at 300 pixels per inch measures about 10.84 × 6.10 cm in print. For YouTube, set your editor to pixels and check the exported dimensions instead.
Does Thumbrix export 4K thumbnails?
Yes. Select 4K before generating with a monthly plan. Thumbrix offers 1080p generation with any account and 2K or 4K generation with a plan, with 16:9 and 9:16 shapes. Paid 2K and 4K downloads retain the generated original. The default 1080p option exports a resized image at 1920 × 1080 or 1080 × 1920; native detail may vary. The result shows its actual pixel dimensions. Older saved images retain their original dimensions, and selecting 4K does not upgrade an existing result.
